A Disturbing Thing Happened On My Way Home Yesterday

Yesterday, I got caught in the torrential downpour and sought refuge under a store awning with several other people. While I was waiting for the rain to subside, I witnessed this in the middle of Times Square. Initially, I was shocked because, at first, I wasn’t sure what I was watching. However, as soon as it became blatantly obvious to me that this overly aggressive white woman was harassing this Asian woman, I decided to start filming.

Excuse my profanity, I was incensed at how this bigot was antagonizing this woman and invading her personal space. She kept asking her “When did Jesus go to China?” She then goes on to tell her friend that the woman could give him “a happy ending” and also, informs the woman that “Jesus don’t like you because you’re Chinese”. She mocks the woman speaking in tongues and goes as far as knocking the lady’s hat off? When she realized that I was tapping, I stopped because I was willing, ready, and able to completely tell this woman off. Off camera, I said, “yes, I’m filming you harassing this woman.” To which she replied, “She was harassing me!” True racist, entitled style. I didn’t see that at all. Did you?

I saw a harmless woman holding a sign with a bible verse on it, not paying this woman any mind. When along came a disgusting racist who thought it was ok to harass and disrespect her, just because she could. I’m not a Bible scholar, but I only remember Jesus being about loving all people. I hate when people use religions to justify hatred. How dare she?

It’s important that all people of color realize that we are very much in this together. A full out war has been waged against those of us who are non-white. It’s not one group being more subjected to gross racialized acts than another. It’s realizing and understanding that if you are non-white, you are a threat to the white supremacist ideology that is being heavily pushed and promoted, on a daily basis. Recognize this and don’t feel like if it’s not happening to you, or someone who looks like you, it’s not worth your attention, time or energy. Or even worse, that you’re exempt.  On the contrary. Let it be a constant reminder. A staunch warning! It’s only a matter of time, before the victim looks like you. An injustice to one, is most definitely an injustice to all. It is OUR problem. A problem made even more severe with our current racist in office that has emboldened and empowered racist people all over America to feel as though, they can abuse and mistreat people and they will not face any punitive consequences. In fact, they may be, congratulated and rewarded for their heinous behavior.

No! When they take off the hood, pick up your weapon. Put ignorant hateful people like this on blast. Expose them for the scum they are. This is OUR problem. United we stand.
